Business paraphrasing- with the person centred approach
To paraphrase a clients needs, you have to focus, listen and offer back what you think has been stated.
" so John, I think I'm hearing what you're after... if I've got this right, a full website, with the option to have podcasting included, but sounds like you're also worried?......... that you don't have enough in the budget this year for additional features. Is that right..so far John?
Giving your business client the time to correct you, confirm with you or tell you just how much you didn't actually hear him or her, is also crucial and gives you a chance to ensure you get it just as John wants it and understood fully, from John's perspective.
This includes being able to be corrected as well, not feeling too disheartened if you didn't get John exactly right, and not being too self critical when this does happen.
The 'busy' in business, should never mean no time to really listen and for business paraphrasing, the skill in this is reccounting what the business client really wants, tentatively, confidently, creating a visualisation of John doing what he really wants to do, with your help. Further, letting that impact on you and reporting how this makes you feel too, is also important.
"John, I'm really glad I understand what you need now. Your idea sounds brilliant.I think I can really help here ( if you can ).
You are building a relationship, business trust and helping someone realise their business dream. Enjoy it and your business clients will too.
